We explore the innovative work of Henry O'Connell and Canary Speech, where advanced AI is used to uncover hidden health insights within our speech patterns. Henry has a background in biochemistry from the University of Connecticut and has led multiple technology firms. At Canary Speech, he's pioneering the use of speech and language technology to identify health conditions

Introduction

Jordi: Welcome to the Torras AI podcast. Henry, thank you for joining us!

Henry: It's a pleasure to be here. I'm excited to discuss our work at Canary Speech and its impact.

The Story Behind Canary Speech

Jordi: Henry, what is the story behind Canary Speech?

Henry: The idea for Canary Speech came from my personal experiences. I've known Jeff Adams, who worked on natural language processing and voice algorithms, for 45 years. We decided to apply sub-language elements and vocal biomarkers to identify health conditions and diseases. Our approach analyzes 15.5 million data elements per minute from speech, which provides a rich dataset for machine learning models.

Understanding Vocal Biomarkers

Jordi: Is this what you call "biomarkers"? Can you explain what vocal biomarkers are in the context of Canary Speech?

Henry: Yes, vocal biomarkers are unique features in speech that are consistent across languages. For instance, we analyze 2,548 biomarkers in speech. These biomarkers can indicate health conditions like Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment. The remarkable thing is that these biomarkers are universal, meaning they work across different languages and cultures.

Success Stories

Jordi: Can you share a success story where Canary Speech is being used?

Henry: Sure! One success story involves our work in clinics, where our technology is used to assess cognitive and behavioral health conditions. For example, we're able to identify conditions like anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer's in real time during a patient's conversation with a doctor. This has been incredibly valuable, as it provides clinicians with actionable data to better manage patient care. We've also conducted population assessments in the UK, reducing the time it takes to assess cognitive health from 20 minutes to just 40 seconds per patient.

The Future of AI

Jordi: What do you think the future of AI will bring?

Henry: The future of AI, particularly in healthcare, is about accessibility. We envision a world where healthcare can be delivered effectively regardless of a person's location. For example, we're working with agricultural workers in remote areas of Australia, using our technology to monitor their health between visits from medical teams. As we continue to expand, we're adding more conditions like PTSD and MS to our models, ensuring that our technology becomes a comprehensive tool for healthcare professionals.
